Basilica Cistern
January 7, 2009

This enormous cistern dates, like the nearby by Hagia Sophia, from the 6th century reign of Emperor Justinian. It's hard to believe that this cavernous water supply could ever be overlooked, but rumor has it the cistern was forgotten until a 19th century family discovered they could catch fish through a hole in their floor!
