After arriving in Istanbul and dropping our bags at the Empress Zoey hotel, Elizabeth and I began our explorations by checking out the nearby Hippodrome, a shadow of its former Roman glory, and the Topkapi Palace, where the Ottoman sultans created and refined the decadent lifestyle for which they were justly famous--you only have to see the kitchens and the harem to understand.
